Walter Burns (Cary Grant) es un editor de The Morning Post que se entera de que su ex esposa y ex periodista estrella, Hildegard "Hildy" Johnson (Rosalind Russell), est a punto de casarse con Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy), un modesto agente de seguros y dedicarse a una vida tranquila como esposa y madre en Albany, Nueva York. Walter determina sabotear estos planes, para lo cual induce a la reticente Hildy a cubrir una ltima historia, la prxima ejecucin del asesino convicto Earl Williams (John Qualen).
La pelcula es una magistral adaptacin de la obra de teatro de Hecht y MacArthur que obtuvo en su momento excelentes crticas y que se ha convertido hoy en todo un clsico de la comedia de Hollywood. Anteriormente la misma historia haba sido llevada a la gran pantalla por Lewis Milestone en 1931 en la pelcula "Un gran reportaje" y en 1974 el gran Billy Wilder tambin hara otra versin de la misma obra en su pelcula "Primera Plana".
